Performance Measurement

The term “performance” always denotes both the return of an investment and its risk. The performance of investments can be compared only if both return and risk are considered. Examples are:

  • A benchmark for an asset class should always have a risk profile similar to the asset class.

  • Metrics like the Sharpe Ratio try to combine return and risk into a single performance figure.
